Understanding PE Fishing Line Ratings

What PE actually measures

PE is a Japanese sizing standard describing the diameter of braided line, not its strength. PE 1 is roughly 0.165 mm; each step up adds diameter. Two PE 2 braids from different manufacturers can therefore have noticeably different breaking strains.

That is why rod manufacturers give a PE rating alongside a gram rating: the PE number tells you the line diameter the guides and blank were designed around.

Matching braid to your rod

Start with the PE range printed on the rod and choose the middle of it. Going heavier costs you casting distance; going lighter risks the line rather than the rod being the weak point.

• Light game: PE 0.3–0.6
• Spinning: PE 1.0–1.5
• Shore jigging: PE 2.0–3.0
• Offshore jigging: PE 2.0–4.0

Carrier count

Eight-carrier braids are rounder and quieter through the guides than four-carrier braids and generally cast further. Four-carrier braids are tougher against abrasion and cost less — a fair trade for rough ground.
