What gear do I need for squid fishing at night in Cyprus?
Cyprus squid fishing runs from autumn through spring, mostly around harbour lights, weed edges and shallow rocky bays. At night the fish are shallower and less shy, so sink rate and jig size matter more than exotic colour.
What to look for
- Jig size
- 2.5 and 3.0 cover most nights; drop to 1.8–2.0 when squid are small or fussy.
- Sink rate
- Shallow or basic models over weed, deep models off harbour walls.
- Colour
- Natural and orange bases under lights, glow or UV in fully dark water.
- Extras
- A headtorch on red, and a squid-proof bag or bucket you don't mind inking.

- When is the best time?
- First hours after dark, particularly around a rising tide and calm water.
- Do I need a dedicated egi rod?
- It helps — a soft-tipped 2.4–2.6 m rod gives a better jerk-and-pause — but a light spinning rod will catch squid.
